Lion Mews, Hove: restoration of a victorian wine merchants after fire damage.

The shop is part of the ‘Lion Mews’ a retail and residential development from the early 19th Century and still owned by the family. The current owner used to work in the shop as a small child.

The shop was gutted by an electrical fire, destroying the original oak panelled interior, leaded glass shopfront and extensive smoke damage permeating throughout.

The fire also compromised the integrity of the floor structure to the flats over, luckily these were not otherwise effected.

We were engaged to prepare all documentation to tender and manage the restoration.

This included:

+ condition survey

+ commissioning of structural surveys

+  negotiations with the loss adjuster

+ schedule of dilapidations

+  tender documents

+  construction contract documents and certification of the works

The reinstatement of the original features were not possible and a more modern pragmatic approach was undertaken.

This project required a light hand to manage the project as the owners had great sentimental attachment to the shop and the wine merchant was responsible for the fire.
